Margin modeling

DTC margin calculator: profit per first order.

Last updated: November 2026Published by Cydney Mar

A DTC product makes money when the revenue you keep after returns covers product cost, fulfillment, fees, and the cost of winning the order.

The Launch Direct margin calculator, published by Cydney Mar, estimates that number from six figures you supply. Cost and Margins is a core stage of Cydney's Concept-to-Reality Pathway: build for real profit and scalability, and learn to calculate costs properly before you order inventory or buy ads.

How do I know if my DTC product makes money?

Subtract landed cost, fulfillment, fees, returns, and acquisition cost from your selling price, per order. If what is left is positive, each first order pays for itself. If it is negative, you are relying on repeat purchases to recover the loss.

Gross margin alone can mislead. A product can show a healthy gap between price and cost and still lose money once shipping, payment fees, refunds, and ad spend are counted. That is why direct sellers model the whole order, not just the unit.

Calculator

Estimate your profit per order

All fields are required. Commas, a dollar sign and a percent sign are accepted.

What the customer pays, before shipping charges.

Factory price plus freight, duties and packaging.

Pick, pack and postage you pay. Enter 0 if the customer pays it all.

Percent of the selling price, for example 3.

Ad or marketing spend to win one new order. Enter 0 to see margin before marketing.

Percent of orders refunded, for example 10.

Your estimate

Fill in every field and press Calculate estimate. Results appear only when all figures are valid, and clear when you change an input.

Assumptions

  • One unit per order.
  • Returned orders are fully refunded and the unit is not resold.
  • Fulfillment and acquisition costs are paid on every order, including returned ones.
  • Fees are charged on revenue kept after returns.
  • Repeat purchases are not included.

This is an estimate for planning, not financial advice.

Getting the inputs right

Where founders get the numbers wrong

Landed cost, not factory price

Include freight, duties, and packaging. Tariffs can change landed cost quickly, so rerun the model when your supplier or shipping route changes.

A realistic acquisition cost

Use your own test results where you have them. Published figures show acquisition costs have been rising, so an older number is likely too low.

Returns by category

Apparel and sized products tend to see more returns than simple goods. Use your category's reality rather than a hopeful guess.

FAQ

Questions founders ask

See all answers in the FAQ
Why do margins matter so much in DTC?
Because every DTC order pays for its own acquisition, shipping, and possible return. If your margin only works with no marketing spend, the model breaks once you buy traffic. Cost and Margins is one of the six stages of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, focused on building for real profit and learning to calculate costs properly.
How much does it cost to acquire a DTC customer?
It varies by category and channel, but it has risen. TYB's 2026 guide reports the average DTC brand's customer acquisition cost has risen 40 to 60% in the past two years. Use your own test results where you have them, and enter a realistic figure in the margin calculator on this site before you order inventory.
How do returns affect a DTC launch?
Returns reduce real revenue and add handling cost, so model them before you price. Saras Analytics reports that 19.3% of online sales were expected to be returned in 2025. Accurate sizing, honest photos, and clear descriptions help reduce returns, and the margin calculator on this site shows how a return rate changes profit per order.
Should I raise prices because of tariffs?
It depends on your landed cost and margin. Yotpo reports that 87% of merchants raised prices to combat tariffs. Recalculate your landed cost per unit, rerun your margin model, and decide whether to adjust price, change suppliers, or rework the product. Cydney Mar has written about Morocco as a manufacturing opportunity worth paying attention to.
How much does it cost to launch a product?
It depends mostly on how many units the factory requires and how many sample rounds you need. Every revision round adds cost and time, which is why getting the prototype right early matters. Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway covers this as Right Prototypes: developing the right samples to cut costly rework.
How much does Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway cost?
Prices are not published on Launch Direct or on cydneymar.com. The cost depends on how much support you need, from a strategy session to hands-on product development such as tech packs, sourcing, and costing. The clearest next step is to contact Cydney through cydneymar.com and describe your product, your stage, and your timeline.
